PODCAST: Body and mind

Are you sitting on the cushion to clear your mind? What do you do with your body when you are in meditation? And vice versa?

This podcast discusses the connection between body and mind, emphasising the significance of the body during practice. Jolinda van Hoogdalem, Bas Gemmink, and I discuss the experience of forgetting one’s body and the interaction between body and mind. Jolinda also provides an explanation for why she cut her fingers.

intense physical experience

Zazen, although seemingly static, is an intense physical experience that reveals this connection. Physical discomfort during sitting brings attention to the body and opens a dialogue between body and mind.

“The body is much more than you think it is.”

Emotions and physical sensations are closely intertwined. Meditation helps to understand and process this interconnection, although meditation can be challenging.

The sitting posture during meditation is important for balance and accepting physical discomfort. Striving for a perfect lotus position is not essential; sitting on a chair is equally valuable.

Qi Gong

Tai Chi or Qi Gong, are recommended as additional methods to strengthen this connection. Enhancing the energetic flow in the body. The body is a means of communication, within yourself and constantly interacting with the environment.

Breathing

Meditation involves integrating body and mind, with a focus on breathing and body awareness to achieve mental calm. It is a continuous practice of being mindful of bodily signals.

Being aware of your body during daily activities, such as cutting vegetables or having conversations, can help integrate the insights gained from meditation.
